Audi 80

80/90

1 Jul 1967

Newly acquired by troubled Volkswagen, the German DKW/Auto Union group – which had merged in the aftermath of the 1930s Great Depression – had been developing a modern, compact front-wheel drive sedan.

VW released it with the long-defunct Audi badge as the 60 and 80 series in 1965.

Powered by a 1.7-litre four-cylinder engine, the 80 featured novel square headlights, no-nonsense three-box styling, a spacious interior and pleasant handling characteristics. Few were sold here locally.

The 90 was a more luxurious and powerful (1.8L) variant of the 80.
