The world's first aluminium sedan, the Audi A8 presented a very convincing alternative to the BMW 7 Series and Mercedes S-class, with its efficienct construction, all-wheel drive option and powerful V8 performance. It was also a vast improvement over its inadequate D1 V8 predecessor of 1991.
