ALFA ROMEO’S updated MiTo light-hatch contender arrived in early 2014 with a price realignment, a new engine choice and some very subtle styling changes that consisted of chrome flourishes on the grille and tail-light surrounds.

The local distributor wisely decided to include a new base model powered by Fiat’s ubiquitous 0.9-litre two-cylinder TwinAir petrol engine that brought the entry price down by $2700 at launch.

All other variants including mid-spec Progression and range-topping Distinctive were powered by the Italian-American company’s 99kW/206Nm 1.4-litre four-cylinder unit matched with either a five-speed manual or a TCT dual-clutch transmission.

Fuel economy was impressive for both powertrains, with the TwinAir sipping just 4.2L/100km, while the 1.4 consumed 5.6L/100 with the manual gearbox and 5.5L/100km with the dual-clutch.

The Fiat Chrysler Group’s Uconnect multimedia infotainment system with a five-inch touchscreen was the big inclusion in the cabin, although none of the variants offered sat-nav even as an option.

Standard equipment on the base MiTo included electric windows, manual air conditioning, cruise control, leather steering wheel, steering wheel audio and phone controls and idle stop, while the top-spec Distinction adds fog-lights, red stitching on the leather steering wheel and dual-zone climate control.
