A new nose gives the facelifted Rexton away, along with a variety of minor trim and dashboard-related changes inside.

Ssangyong dropped the 3.2-litre six-cylinder petrol engine for the third-generation five-cylinder common-rail turbo-diesel five-cylinder unit it introduced in the Series 1 Rexton in early 2004.

The range now consists of the Rexton Sports and Limited – with the latter boasting a long list of standard features.

For 2007 Ssangyong has added an upgraded diesel engine, independent rear suspension and a full-time four-wheel drive system to headline the improvements for its Rexton Limited off-roader.

Now featuring variable-geometry turbocharger technology, the 2.7-litre common-rail turbo-diesel that powers the South Korean maker's flagship SUV offers 17 per cent more torque and 18 per cent more power than before.

The revised engine's outputs are now 142kW (versus 121kW) and 402Nm of torque (up from 340Nm), while official fuel consumption remains a competitive 9.2L/100km.

The upgrade does not apply to the Sports model variant in the Rexton range. This model continues with a solid rear axle and a torque-on-demand 4WD system. It also misses out on the turbocharger upgrade
