By THE GOAUTO TEAM

A variation of the previous Prelude’s three-box two-door coupe theme, Honda refined the style with a stunningly low bonnet line, thin pillars, a large glass area, smooth surfacing and a gently wedging profile.

But the big news was four-wheel steering (4WS) – a mechanical set-up that purportedly aided both high and low-speed manoeuvrability.

Double wishbone suspension and a high-output 106kW 2.0L twin-cam 16-valve engine completed the elegant Prelude Si’s exquisite engineering.

All Mk3s featured cruise control, a sunroof, power windows, and – from early ’89 – alloy wheels.

In October 1990 a minor restyle saw new bumpers and tail-lights, while the model was split in two: Si and Si “Leather Pack” – the latter with leather upholstery, and the return of anti-lock brakes (it disappeared with the demise of the Mk2).

A limited edition Cita model added air-conditioning, a CD player, rear spoiler and floor mats.
