Stability control in demand

Stable condition: ESC is being fitted to more vehicles.

Australian vehicle industry group claims ESC take-up rate is fast increasing

30 Aug 2007

THE proportion of new passenger cars and SUVs sold with electronic stability control (ESC) fitted has grown from 20 per cent to 34.7 per cent over the past 12 months, according to results from a survey conducted by the Federal Chamber of Automotive Industries (FCAI).

In a statement released this week, the FCAI said that between January and June this year 20.6 per cent of new cars and 48.1 per cent of SUVs sold in Australia – from the 38 brands who participated in the survey – had ESC fitted standard. It also said that 17 of these brands were fitting ESC to either 100 per cent of their passenger-car models, 100 per cent of their SUVs, or in some cases both.

There are at least 43 light-vehicle brands operating in Australia. Among those who did not participate were Proton and Lotus. The survey did not correlate with sales data from VFACTS.

The FCAI published a list of vehicle models available with ESC.
