Citroen C4 and Kia Magentis recalled

Tranny trouble: Some versions of Kia's discontinued Magentis can roll out of Park.

Kia's Magentis and Citroen's C4 in latest round of ACCC safety recalls

25 Apr 2011

CITROEN’S C4 hatchback and Kia’s discontinued Magentis sedan have both come in for safety recalls in the past week.

In the case of Citroen’s fourth recall in 2011 – and the second for the C4 this year – 125 examples of the current C4, carrying a range of vehicle identification numbers (VINs), have been called back to fix potentially faulty tailgate wiring.

According to Citroen: “After a number of tailgate movements, damage may occur to electrical wires which could lead to functional problems with various electrical equipment linked to the tailgate.

“The harness sleeve located at the connection of the tailgate and the body is not secured in a manner that can be guaranteed over time.”

Citroen says it will advise the owners of all affected C4s to present their vehicles at a Citroen dealership for checking and, if necessary, tailgate wiring harness replacement.

The current C4, which was released in Australia in April 2005 and will be replaced late this year by a new second-generation model, was one of four Citroen models – including the C5, which has been the subject of three recalls this year - to be recalled for brake assist problems that affected more than 1500 vehicles in January.

Meanwhile, Kia’s first recall since September 2010 (when a handful of Soul models and more than 1000 Sorento SUVs were recalled to fix faulty wiring) affects the mid-size Magentis sedan that was replaced in January by the vastly improved Optima.

An unspecified number of Magentis models built between January 26, 2006 and May 29, 2007 have been recalled for transmission trouble that could result in parked vehicles rolling away if the handbrake is not fully applied on inclines.

“There is a potential concern with the automatic transmission shift lever cable on this vehicle,” said Kia in its Australian Competition and Consumer Commission (ACCC) recall notice.

"There is a possibility that this cable was incorrectly fitted, and may result in incorrect selection of ‘Park’ position in the automatic transmission.”

Affected vehicles – in which gear-shifting may become “difficult or impossible” or the park/gear may not correctly engage – carry VINs ranging between KNAGE223365062238 to KNAGE223365080997, KNAGE224365028436 to KNAGE224365071817, KNAGE223375082336 to KNAGE223375165321 and KNAGE224375086583 to KNAGE224375119798.

Kia advises affected owners to contact their local authorised Kia dealer to arrange inspection and rectification work as soon as possible, or to call Kia Customer Assistance on 1800 600 010 with any concerns in the meantime.

"Pending the inspection of the vehicle we ask that consumers drive their vehicle with care,” said Kia.
