Brits tweak Brera coupe

S treatment: Prodrive has worked its magic on the Brera.

Better-handling British-honed Alfa Romeo Brera coupe is a chance for Oz

ALFA Romeo Australia is “looking with interest” at a collaboration between its Italian parent and special vehicles outfit Prodrive which will see a limited number of sports-honed Brera coupes produced in the United Kingdom.

A spokesperson told GoAuto this week that no discussions had been held between Alfa importer Ateco Automotive and the Australian-based Prodrive AT Asia-Pacific, and that the costs involved for such as specialist vehicle limited its prospects here.

“The problem is homologation and the costs of doing this for such a small number of vehicles,” he said.

Until the official unveiling next week, details remain scarce of the British-honed Brera, which will be limited to 500 cars badged Brera S, and hones in on the handling of the Italian coupe.

The production cars reportedly follow a 12-month “intensive suspension development program” that included full sign-off from Alfa Romeo’s engineering department.

The Brera S will also feature enhancements to the exterior and interior, but no modifications were made to the chosen powertrains – two still-to-be-determined petrol units, but most likely the AWD 3.2-litre V6 and front-drive 2.2-litre four.

Prodrive project leader Peter Cambridge said the collaboration “built on the existing model’s capabilities to deliver outstanding driver feedback and handling”.
