Toyota prices updated HiLux from $23,590 +ORC

Updated Toyota HiLux pick-up pricing lobs ahead of local arrival later this month

13 Aug 2020

TOYOTA Motor Company Australia (TMCA) has announced pricing and specification for all bar the range-topping variants of its updated best-selling HiLux pick-up range, which arrives in local showrooms later this month priced from $23,590 plus on-roads.

Incremental price increases have occurred across the range, with the entry point having risen by $1725 for the petrol, single-cab Workmate 4x2, while the 4x4 SR5 dual-cab automatic is up by $2680.

For now, the range is topped by the $62,420 SR5+ dual-cab auto, with pricing for the flagship Rogue and Rugged X set to be revealed at a later date.

In exchange for the increase in price, HiLux buyers will be compensated with a number of upgrades starting with the revised exterior styling, which brings the HiLux’s look in line with Toyota’s other global pick-ups such as the Tacoma and Tundra.

The headlight design features a more squared-off look compared to its predecessor, while the grille and bumpers have also seen a light redesign.

At the rear, the tail-lights have also been revised slightly with a more triangular shape that wraps around into the side of the tub.

Inside, arguably the largest change is the replacement of the old multimedia system (either 6.0- or 7.0-inches) with a more modern 8.0-inch unit, that has been made more usable with the introduction of knobs in place of the capacitive-touch interface, making it easier for those wearing gloves or with dirty hands.

The new system also comes with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto compatibility, while SR5 grades also score satellite navigation and DAB+ digital radio as standard.

The existing 4.2-inch instrument cluster read out has been updated to now show front-wheel angle along with a range of other driving information.

Arguably the biggest change for the update is the revisions made to the 2.8-litre turbo-diesel four-cylinder engine, which has seen its outputs jump by a considerable 20kW/50Nm to now produce 150kW/500Nm when mated to the six-speed auto.

Six-speed manual grades continue with the existing 420Nm.

Along with the bump in power, Toyota is also claiming fuel economy improvements of up to 11 per cent through a range of measures such as more efficient exhaust gas recirculation and improved cooling abilities.

The increase in power has also seen the HiLux catch up to its rivals in pulling power, with maximum braked towing capacity increasing by 300kg to 3500kg for 4x4 models (4x2 models range from 2500kg to 2800kg depending on engine choice).

The other two HiLux engine choices carry on unchanged, namely the 122kW/245Nm 2.7-litre aspirated petrol four-cylinder unit and the 2.4-litre turbo-diesel four-pot mill, which produces 110kW/400Nm.

Longer rear leaf springs help better suppress road vibrations while spring rates, shock absorbers and suspension bushes have all been retuned in a bid to provide better handling response and greater ride comfort.

Payloads for the revised HiLux range between 980kg and 1275kg, depending on the variant.

The first examples of the updated HiLux range touch down later in the month, while the Rugged X and Rogue range toppers will follow further down the line.

Through the first seven months of the year, Toyota has sold 25,295 combined examples of the HiLux, helping continue its streak as the best-selling vehicle in Australia.
