Subaru Australia releases its first locally developed limited edition WRX

24 Dec 2004

BACKYARD tuners specialising in uprating the Subaru Impreza WRX turbocharged blaster are in for a fight from the Australian distributor, which has decided to release its own special edition.

Called the WRP10, it is an Australia-only limited edition model (200 examples) that works into the range between the standard 168kW WRX and the top-spec 195kW WRX STi.

The car, which will go on-sale in late January for around $50,000, has been developed locally by engineers based at STi Australia within Subaru’s showcase Melbourne Docklands retail centre.

Available exclusively as a 'Crystal Grey' metallic manual sedan, the WRP10 includes an STI engine performance upgrade kit increasing peak power to 175kW at 6000 rpm.

The kit includes a replacement Electronic Control Unit, upgraded exhaust components and a unique large single tip muffler.

Not only do the modifications lift power, Subaru also claims more responsive, linear performance from the 2.0-litre boxer engine when accelerating into the higher rpm range Handling is uprated by a carbon-fibre strut brace and WRX suspension lowering kit, with stiffer springs that drop the car’s ride height by 15mm.

WRP10 is finished off with high performance, lightweight five-spoke forged alloy RAYS wheels and Pirelli P Zero Nero tyres (215 45Z R 17 91Y).

2 center image The WRP10 derives its name from elements that are all integral to the Subaru brand. The “WR” represents Impreza WRX’s success in World Rally competition, “P” the rallying contribution from Pirelli tyres and “10” the years since launch of the original Impreza WRX.

“The limited edition model is the first developed by STI Australia, in conjunction with STI Japan and provides a wonderful opportunity to showcase the performance credentials of Subaru and STI engineers,” said Subaru Australia general manager Nick Senior.

“The WRP10 is sure to have strong appeal for Impreza WRX enthusiasts and will provide us with a chance to assess the potential for further limited editions and how Australia can contribute to the product planning and engineering process in the future”.
