THE price of entry to the Porsche range will drop $15,300 next year when the new Macan mid-sized SUV arrives in Australia from $84,900 plus on-road costs.
The pricing, announced today by Porsche Cars Australia, makes the Audi Q5-based vehicle the most affordable Porsche in Australia for about 25 years, and the first below $100,000 since the arrival of the second-generation Cayenne in 2007.
The cheapest model in the current Porsche line-up is the $100,200 3.6 petrol V6 Cayenne SUV, followed by the $101,100 Cayenne 3.0 V6 Diesel.
Porsche will offer a three-model line-up when the Macan arrives in showrooms next year, kicking off with the 3.0-litre S Diesel from $84,900, rising to $87,200 for the 3.0-litre twin-turbo petrol Macan S and topping out with the 3.6-litre Macan Turbo from $122,900, plus on-road costs.
Porsche Cars Australia confirmed in a statement that the Macan was now available to order, with deliveries to customers starting in late June 2014.
The Macan arrives on the scene without any direct rivals, although its mechanically related cousin, the Audi Q5, kicks off from $63,200 before hitting $89,400 for the super powerful SQ5 turbo-diesel sports variant.
At a stretch, one possible rival is the Range Rover Evoque four-door that is priced from $49,995 for the two-wheel drive base diesel variant up to $80,440 for the all-wheel drive petrol Si4 Prestige.
The flagship 3.6-litre twin-turbo V6 Macan Turbo is, unsurprisingly, the most powerful in its class, with 294kW/550Nm on offer, helping propel the sporty crossover from a standing start to 100km/h in just 4.8 seconds.
The Macan S uses a 3.0-litre twin-turbo petrol V6 capable of producing 250kW/460Nm with a 0-100km/h sprint time of 5.4 seconds and fuel economy of 9.0L/100km.
Despite the shared underpinnings, the 230kW/650Nm 3.0-litre Audi SQ5 is significantly more powerful than the Macan oil-burner that produces 190kW/580Nm.
Fuel consumption for the diesel is rated at 6.3 litres per 100 kilometres on the combined cycle, edging out the Audi SQ5’s figure of 6.8L/100km.
After months of teaser shots, videos of camouflaged test vehicles and leaked images, Porsche finally ripped the covers off its sub-Cayenne SUV offering at the Los Angeles motor show last month.
Porsche describes the Macan – known as the Cajun for ‘Cayenne Junior’ during development – as a compact SUV, it will slide into the mid-size SUVs over $60,000 category when it reaches Australia, sharing a segment with the Q5, Evoque, BMW X3 and Volvo XC60.
More details such as standard equipment are likely to be made available closer to the early June launch date.
