Mitsubishi tweaks Triton

Elder statesman: The current-shape Mitsubishi Triton dates back to 2006, but thanks to sharp pricing is still selling in strong numbers.

Slimmer range and more airbags lead the changes for revised MY13 Mitsubishi Triton

19 Feb 2013

WITH an all-new model not due until 2014, Mitsubishi has given its venerable Triton ute range a spruce up, trimming back the number of variants available and adding safety equipment and cosmetic updates to many of those that remain.

Several variants also receive price cuts of between $1000 and $3250 (the latter for the flagship GLX-R dual cab), although the starting price for the line-up remains at $20,990 plus on-road costs for the GL single-cab-chassis, which continues as the only petrol-powered version in the range.

Despite dating back to 2006 and subsequently fighting substantially newer competition, Mitsubishi’s light-commercial staple continues to sell in strong numbers, with the 4x4 versions up 22.7 per cent in January, thanks in part to sharp driveaway pricing on 2012-plated stock.

The tweaks to the range announced today come just weeks before the company pulls the wraps from a concept previewing the next-generation Triton at the Geneva motor show in early March – with a hybrid version tipped to be on the cards for production.

The MY13 facelift sees the company axe variants including 4x2 versions of the higher-specified GL-R and GLX-R, as well as the GL-R Club Cab 4x4.

Importantly for buyers looking for a weekday workhorse and weekend family car, all Triton double-cabs now come with standard side and curtain airbags.

Mitsubishi has also added revised cloth seats across the range with extended travel and new fabric.

New silver accents and gauges also feature, depending on the variant.

The sole 4x2 double-cab variant – the GLX – also gets the more potent 2.5-litre turbo-diesel previously used only in 4x4 models, as well as new 16-inch steel wheels, body-colour fender flares and side-steps.

An unchanged engine range includes the 94kW/194Nm 2.4-litre petrol, the 100kW/314Nm 2.5-litre turbo-diesel and the more potent 131kW/400Nm 2.5-litre turbo-diesel (though the four-speed automatic limits torque to 350Nm).

All engines come standard matched to a five-speed manual gearbox, while most are also available with a four-speed auto for an extra $2000 (or $2500 on the flagship GLX-R double-cab).

Mitsubishi still provides a five-year/130,000km new-vehicle warranty, five-year roadside-assist and capped-price servicing for the first four years or 60,000 km of ownership.
