MERCEDES-AMG’S flagship GT sportscar range will jump from two variants to six when a pair of all-new roadsters and two extra hot-shot coupes join the revised line-up in Australia about October.
As reported by GoAuto in March, Roadster pricing will kick off at $283,711 plus on-road costs for the base GT – a premium of $25,000 over the similarly equipped coupe – rising to $338,711 for the GT C.
Existing coupe variants, the GT and GT S, also get a lift via more engine performance and the new-look Panamericana grille with its vertical chrome bars that becomes a standard feature of the range.
The GT Coupe’s power from its front-mounted 4.0-litre biturbo V8 rises 10kW, to 350kW, while torque goes up 30Nm, to 630Nm. Similarly, the GT S’s power rises 9kW, to 384kW, and torque jumps 20Nm, to 670Nm.
Pricing for these coupes drops a smidgeon, to $258,711 for the GT and $298,711 for the GT S.
The new extreme GT R Coupe with its thumping 430kW/700Nm version of the 4.0-litre V8 will top the range at $348,711 – about $42,000 cheaper than Porsche’s benchmark 911 Turbo coupe.
Capable of covering the 0-100km/h dash in 3.6 seconds, the R Coupe is said to have a top speed of 318km/h.
And for a limited time, Mercedes-AMG will round out the range with a fourth hardtop variant, the GT C Coupe, armed with the same 410kW/680Nm front-mounted V8 as the AMG GT C Roadster.
Called the AMG GT C Edition 50 – so named to celebrate the 50th anniversary of AMG – the special coupe will slot into the middle of the range at $335,211 “until 2018”.
Apart from the high-performance 410kW engine, the Edition 40 Coupe gets a bunch of AMG extras inside and out, including AMG Performance seats with quilted Nappa leather, AMG steering wheel, interior night lighting, LED high-performance headlights, 19-inch front and 20-inch rear forged alloy wheels, black chrome highlights and a choice of two premium Designo paint colours – grey and white.
All GT variants deliver power to the rear wheels via AMG’s own rear-mounted seven-speed dual-clutch transaxle transmission.
The “C” and “R” variants get the muscular rear fenders with wider rear wheels for superior traction, along with active rear-axle steering.
The roadsters come with a fabric roof that opens and closes in 11 seconds at up to 50km/h, stashing behind the seats when folded.
A wind blocker behind the headrests and heated seats help to make open-top driving more comfortable. Stepping up to the GT C Roadster adds Mercedes’ Airscarf neck-warming device, along with upgraded steering wheels and Nappa leather Performance seats with ventilation.
