HSV lets SportsCat RS out of the bag
Limited-edition HSV SportsCat RS to be priced $1000 above range base price

HOLDEN Special Vehicles (HSV) has given its Colorado-based SportsCat ute the limited-edition treatment to rev up sales over the next two months.
Called SportsCat RS, the crew-cab 4x4 pick-up has been given a mostly cosmetic makeover that includes some extras from the flagship SportsCat+ such as the bonnet bulge and sculpted wheelarch flares to increase its rugged appeal, especially among potential off-roaders.
Just 100 of the RS units will be built, with 94 destined for HSV’s Australian customers and rest going to New Zealand.
All will be painted white with splashes of gloss and matte black, and red trim to lift the ute’s street appeal.
The RS will be priced at $63,990 plus on-road costs in Australia, making it just $1000 dearer than the base SportsCat automatic on which it is based, and $5000 cheaper than the flagship SportsCat+.
The pricing puts the RS bang on top of Toyota’s HiLux Rugged X auto ($63,690), and considerably cheaper than Ford’s Ranger Raptor ($75,390).
The RS gets a black-painted version of SportsCat’s 18-inch six-spoke forged alloy wheels with chunky 285/60 Cooper Zeon LTX all-terrain tyres that HSV claims provide the perfect balance between off-road capability and on-road handling.
Like the SportsCat+, the wheelarches get black plastic flares to cater for the 10-inch-wide wheels that extend the track 30mm beyond that of Holden’s sportiest Colorado, the Z71. The ride height at the front is 45mm higher than the Z71 for superior off-roading.
The RS carries over HSV’s sports chassis package that includes sports shocks and tweaks to the electronic stability control. Brakes are the standard fare, but AP Racing front discs with four-piston callipers and a bigger master cylinder are available as a $1995 option.
The RS shares the standard Colorado’s 147kW/500Nm 2.8-litre diesel engine, in this case married to a six-speed automatic transmission with active select and shift-on-the-fly four-wheel drive.
Apart from the bonnet bulge, exterior features include tubular side steps, hard tonneau cover and sports bar. The hard tonneau gets a quick-release system, while the tailgate gains a soft-opening strut.
In contrast with the black treatment of the front fascia, prominent recovery tow hooks protruding from the bumper are painted gloss red. A red strip runs full width of the front, separating the grille from the bonnet.
This black and red treatment is carried over into the interior where red double stitching is employed on the SV sports seats, steering wheel and dash. The seats and dash are cloaked in a mix of leather and suede, with perforated leather on the dash.
Among the options are a tub liner for $300.
Production of the SportsCat RS starts this month and continues through June at Walkinshaw Automotive Group’s Clayton South factory complex in Melbourne.
As GoAuto has reported, HSV’s annual sales target for SportsCat is 1000 units, meaning the RS should make up about 10 per cent of the 2019 run.
On top of that, HSV is hoping to sell up to 1000 Camaros and between 500 and 750 Silverados. Both of these models are converted to right-hand drive at the Clayton plant.
