New transmission cuts Falcon, Territory fuel use

Shifting economy: Petrol versions of Ford's mildly facelifted Territory will get a boost to economy thanks to a new ZF transmission, but no change for the more frugal diesel.

Six-cylinder petrol Ford Falcon and Territory economy boosted with new transmission

7 Oct 2014

FORD has given its six-cylinder petrol Falcon and Territory models a new lighter and specially developed automatic transmission, cutting fuel consumption by as much as nine per cent.

The new ZF 6HP21 six-speed automatic transmission has improved both model's efficiency with lightweight construction, a redesigned valve-body and shift calibration specifically tailored to Ford's 4.0-litre normally aspirated six-cylinder engine.

Entry level versions of the Falcon get the greatest gains with fuel economy boosted from 9.9-litres per 100km to 9.0L/100km, while sportier XR6 and G6E variants have a more milder improvement from 9.9L/100km to 9.5L/100km.

Under the bonnet of the Territory TX, the same engine now uses 10.2L/100km, down from 10.6L/100km, while TS versions benefit from a slight improvement from 10.6L/100km to 10.5L/100km.

The Falcon's new-look nose and tail have contributed to the fuel savings by improving aerodynamics and cutting drag at higher speeds, while new Michelin low rolling resistance tyres further reduce freeway losses.

Ford says, in addition to the efficiency advantages, the new ZF transmission also boosts driver enjoyment with “seamless gear changes and livelier performance”.

An enhanced driver recognition program uses Adaptive Shift Strategy modes to optimise operation when under changing circumstances. Economy, performance, sports, up-hill, down-hill and trailer towing modes are selectable according to the driving style.

Improvements to drivability continue to the chassis for some Falcon variants with suspension upgrades for G6, EcoLPi and EcoBoost variants.

G6 and EcoLPi Falcons get a fattened front stabiliser bar, re-tuned springs and dampeners all round, new geometry to optimise the new Michelin tyres and a reduction in rear stabiliser bar thickness for better rear-end grip.

The four-cylinder EcoBoost Falcon has undergone a similar suspension re-tune and geometry update, but its now gains a 14mm rear stabiliser bar where it previously had none.

Ford says the suspension changes have resulted in a sportier driving experience and better cornering without compromising ride comfort.

Transmissions in the diesel-powered Territory, six-cylinder XR6 Turbo and G6E Turbo Falcon are unchanged, as is the associated fuel consumption.

The facelifted Falcon and Territory arrive in Ford showrooms in the latter part of November with Falcon pricing kicking-off from $35,900 before on-road costs, and Territory on offer from $36,990.
