Geneva show: Honda teases Urban EV prototype interior

New, digital dashboard to feature in all-electric Honda Urban EV prototype

14 Feb 2019

HONDA has given fans of its upcoming all-electric Urban EV prototype a teaser of its interior, with the futuristic cabin set for a public reveal at the Geneva motor show on March 5.

A single image of its dashboard shows a large, full-width digital display running from the instrument cluster to the passenger’s side of the dashboard, displaying a number of readouts.

The trio of screens have opened the EV menu which shows information on the Urban EV’s battery-electric powertrain including remaining battery percentage, charging status, charging limit and the charging wait time schedule.

A home screen shortcut also reveals interface applications such as navigation, phone, smartphone connection, audio options and power delivery to the wheels.

Underneath the screens, a long, unbroken wood trim adds ambience and also houses some shortcuts including the home screen button, an audio on/off button and a volume knob.

The steering wheel features the usual array of buttons, showing features including lane-keep assist, autonomous cruise control, voice assistant and steering wheel heating.

An air-conditioning cluster is also barely visible below the shortcut buttons.

Honda says it has designed the interior to have a “warm and engaging atmosphere” inspired by the Urban EV concept from the 2017 Franfurt motor show.

The Urban EV concept also featured a braod digital screen across the dashboard and brown wood trim, however its bench-style seats upholstered in natural grey fabric are less likely to carry over.

Minimalism was the theme of the Urban EV concept with no transmission tunnel or gear selector, and while the prototype is still likely to have a console separating the front passengers, it is possible to have no transmission tunnel due to its full-electric drivetrain.

Honda has also previously released a teaser image of the Urban EV prototype’s exterior, which is a departure from the styling of the concept that stole the show at Frankfurt in 2017.

The boxy, old-school dimensions of the concept have been traded for more rounded, bubble-like lines, while retaining its small, circular LED headlights.

When the Urban EV makes it to production, it will be the Honda’s first mass-produced battery EV to be sold in Europe, however powertrain details are still unknown.

More info on the Urban EV prototype will be revealed at the Geneva show next month.
