Volkswagen reveals T6.1 Transporter

Late Q1 2020 launch set for heavily facelifted Volkswagen Transporter van, pick-up

10 Apr 2019

VOLKSWAGEN Commercial Vehicles has revealed the facelifted Transporter mid-size LCV that rides on its updated T6.1 platform and is due in Australian showrooms at the end of the first quarter next year.

Following in the tyre tracks of the refreshed Multivan that made its debut in February, the Transporter is available in panel van, Kombi and cab-chassis body styles, with the latter offering single- and dual-cab configurations.

The Transporter’s new look is almost identical to that of the Multivan, with the exception of its concealed rear side windows and reduced chrome trim for the grille and front bumper.

Inside, a thorough redesign has resulted in a new way of accommodating long cargo, with items now able to be partly stowed under the passenger side of the front bench seat that also now has lockable storage space.

As a result, maximum compartment length grows from 2450mm to 2800mm for short-wheelbase variants and 2900mm to 3300mm for long-wheelbase versions.

A 230V power outlet has been added near the driver’s seat, while lockable cargo capacity separate to the cabin is now offered with the panel van and Kombi when the optional bulkhead is fitted.

As reported, standard specification for the Transporter has been extended with the addition of H7 headlights, power-adjustable side mirrors with heating, central locking, Bluetooth connectivity, power windows and LED interior lighting.

A central touchscreen powered by the German brand’s new MIB3 infotainment system is optionally available, bundling in an integrated SIM card for connectivity.

Thanks to a switch from hydraulic to electromechanical power steering, the Transporter has a larger suite of advanced driver-assist systems, including lane-keep and steering assist, blind-spot monitoring, rear cross-traffic alert, park assist, traffic sign recognition, hill-start assist, post-collision braking, trailer assist and cross-wind assist (panel van and Kombi only).

Shared with the Multivan, the Transporter is offered with 2.0-litre turbo-diesel engines in four states of tune (66kW, 81kW, 110kW and 146kW). The latter two are available with Volkswagen’s 4Motion all-wheel-drive system.

A battery-electric Transporter will also be offered with an 82kW electric motor and a 77.6kWh battery pack that combine for more than 400km of driving range on the NEDC cycle and a maximum payload of nearly 1200kg.

Volkswagen Group Australia (VGA) will announce pricing and specification closer to the Transporter’s launch. It is unknown if the zero-emissions variant is on its radar.

For reference, the Transporter line-up currently starts from $37,490 plus on-road costs for the manual TDI250 SWB panel van and tops out at $60,190 for the automatic TDI450 LWB dual-cab-chassis with 4Motion.

Sales of the Transporter have taken a significant hit this year, with 322 examples sold to the end of March – a 21.3 per cent decrease over the 409 deliveries made during the same period in 2018.

As a result, the Transporter is now the fifth best-selling model in the mid-size-LCV segment, trailing the Toyota HiAce (1340 units), Hyundai iLoad (987), Renault Trafic (499) and Ford Transit Custom (485).
