SKODA is gauging interest in a new hybrid small SUV to be uncovered at this year’s Geneva motor show called Vision X that previews the future design language of its upcoming crossover.

Although just in the design study phase, the Vision X could preview a new production small SUV from Skoda that would slot in below the Karoq mid-sizer and Kodiaq large SUV, as a replacement for the Yeti that has finished production in Europe and is currently in runout in Australia.

According to the Czech brand, “the concept of the urban crossover transfers the characteristic features of Skoda’s successful SUV models to another vehicle segment”, alluding to a future compact crossover that could be better positioned to take on the likes of the Mazda CX-3, Mitsubishi ASX, Toyota C-HR and Hyundai Kona.

Speaking to GoAuto, Skoda Australia public relations manager Kurt McGuiness said however, that the project has yet to be confirmed for production.

“That’s the thing with design studies, they’re the first iteration,” he said.

“But in terms of indicating a foray into that, it’s the first sort of sign that the brand is looking at it.

“Skoda is certainly one of the most progressive brands in the (Volkswagen) Group and this next step is a great indication to come.”

While still too early to reveal exact details, the Vision X will be underpinned by a hybrid powertrain, part of Skoda’s Strategy 2025 that will see electrified powertrains account for a quarter of all sales over the next eight years.

Looking like a jacked-up Fabia hatchback – which will also make its debut in facelifted guise at the Geneva motor show – the exterior sketch images reveal smooth lines and clean surface contours, which keep the Vision X’s styling in line with its larger SUV siblings.

Integrated roof racks, black-plastic underbody cladding, 20-inch wheels, split headlights, subtle roof spoiler, sleek tail-lights and a large panoramic glass roof can also be glimpsed from the pictures, while the drawings also show off the FlexGreen duco.

Inside sketches of the Vision X reveal a horizontally themed dashboard with a floating infotainment screen, digital instrumentation and green highlights throughout.

Skoda also says that interior ambience will be lifted by “illuminated elements made of cut crystal glass in conjunction with the colour display create atmospheric lighting effects”.

The reveal of the Skoda Vision X will occur during next month’s Geneva motor show, which kicks off from March 8.
