McLaren’s P1 puts fire on ice

Testing shows the way forward for McLaren’s P1 is sideways.

1 May 2013

SENDING 673kW through just two wheels is a difficult balancing act at the best of times. However, what if it is on a frozen lake, and the car in question is McLaren’s hyper-hybrid P1 supercar?Barely months before the first customers take delivery of the 375 P1s that will be built, McLaren is still busy testing in the wintry extremes of northern Sweden to ensure the car can cope with anything new owners will throw at it.

The supercar maker has released a video featuring the newest twin-turbo V8-powered McLaren, which also has an electric motor feeding in even more power, performing what it says is “development and durability testing”.

The video shows the mid-engined, rear-wheel-drive coupe sliding gracefully from corner to corner and still managing to find traction despite the glassy surface.

The P1 will appear at a number of events over the next few months, with McLaren hoping its last minute testing will ensure the supercar is, as it claims, “the best drivers car in the world on road and track”.

The modern-day McLaren is also expected to show its goods at next month’s Goodwood Festival of Speed.
