Lamborghini shows off custom SC20 track toy

One lucky/wealthy customer is about to take delivery of their new Lamborghini SC20

17 Dec 2020

LAMBORGHINI has become the latest brand to throw its hat in the roofless speedster ring, this week unveiling the SC20; a one-off, all-carbon open-top V12 track toy that is also road legal.

Unlike the Aston Martin V12 Speedster or McLaren Elva, the SC20 will at this stage be limited to just a single unit reserved for one very lucky customer who was reportedly involved in the project from the very beginning.

Made by hand and almost completely out of carbon-fibre, the SC20 draws on a number of previous limited-edition Lamborghinis for its design inspiration as well as current competition cars like the Huracan GT3 Evo which inspired some of the front aero features.

“Two years after the SC18 Alston, the SC20 was a new, intriguing challenge,” Lamborghini head of design Mitja Borkert said.

“The chief sources of inspiration were the Diablo VT Roadster, Aventador J, Veneno Roadster and Concept S, and the result is a dramatic combination of creativity and racing attitude.”

Finished in a striking white, black and blue colour scheme, the SC20 also utilises carbon-fibre for the vast majority of its interior including the dashboard cover, rear wall, door panels, centre console, steering wheel trim and seats with the latter then being upholstered in Alcantara and leather.

Boasting no roof and absolutely no windscreen, Lamborghini says a great deal of work went into delivering “optimal airflow for both performance and the cockpit’s occupants”, especially at high speeds.

High speeds would seem par for the course given the SC20 is a Lamborghini but even more so given the fact its 6.5-litre V12 petrol engine produces 566kW of power and 720Nm of torque – exactly the same as the Aventador SVJ.

All of that power is fed to all four wheels via a seven-speed automatic transmission.

Engineered entirely by Lamborghini Squadra Corse – the brand’s motorsport department – it should come as no surprise to see a series of aggressive aero features including the large three-way adjustable carbon wing.

Staggered single-nut aluminium rims (20-inch front, 21-inch rear) shod with super-sticky Pirelli P Zero Corsa tyres comprise the rolling stock while cabin items like the air vents were custom 3D printed at the brand’s Sant’Agata Bolognese factory.

According to Lamborghini chief technical officer Maurizio Reggiani, the SC20 is a “combination of sophisticated engineering, Italian craftsmanship, sportiness and advanced design”.

“It is also an example of applying our V12 engine and carbon-fibre to a radical open-top vehicle that unmistakably carries the Lamborghini DNA.”

No pricetag has been revealed by the brand given the project was a strict one-off and tailored to the tastes and requests of the customer, as reiterated by Lamborghini Motorsport boss Giorgio Sanna.

“The SC20 is one more technical and styling exercise that associates Squadra Corse experience with Lamborghini design, masterfully interpreted by our Centro Stile based on the customer’s wishes, which was the focus of the project during the entire vehicle development and construction process,” he said.

Lamborghini has sold 101 new vehicles in 2020 as of November, down 37 units (26.8 per cent) on the 138 it managed over the same period last year.
