THE divide separating traditional supercar-makers from the top-end offerings of more mainstream car brands is getting ever narrower. While the likes of Lamborghini, Ferrari and McLaren still hold sway at the very top of the pile, companies like Audi, BMW and Ford are offering – or are about to launch – devices that blur the distinction between ‘prestige sport’ and ‘super’.
Mercedes-Benz, too, can be counted in this select group. It has almost always had something big, powerful and overt at the top of the model line up, of course, but not until the 2010 gullwing-doored SLS AMG did it have on its hands a fast, relatively agile, unique looking, supercar-baiting contender.
Now, though, something smaller, lighter, arguable faster… but perhaps a little less dramatic than the SLS is here. We get behind the wheel of the Mercedes-AMG GT S.
