TOYOTA'S new Corolla is expected to be confirmed as Australia’s best-selling car for the month of June when official VFACTS figures are released tomorrow (July 4).
Figures obtained by GoAuto reveal the mighty small car not only outsold the Holden Commodore, but also came within around 100 sales of breaking through the 6000 mark.
The Corolla was expected to do well given that June was the first full month of sales for the new model and that it was backed by a huge marketing campaign.
The fact that June is also traditionally a strong month for fleets helped give the Corolla the boost it needed to become number one for the month.
Holden would not be crying in its beer though, with the Commodore sales for June coming in strongly at just below 5600.
Ford’s Falcon was not in the race, but its solid total of around 3200 would have been welcomed by the Blue Oval team.
One of the big improvers in June was the Toyota Aurion, which recorded its best ever month with around 2600 sold, while Camry sales came in at around the same mark.
The Mitsubishi 380 is not about to set any sales records, but its June result of 970 is an improvement on recent performances.
The Corolla was not the only star of the small car segment, with the Mazda3 hitting sales of around 3000 in June.
Mitsubishi also had something to smile about, selling more than 2100 Lancers.
Holden had a reasonably strong small-car month, selling a combined tally of around 2400 Astras and Vivas.
Ford sold about 1500 of its Focus, which is about to be replaced, while Nissan could only manage around 1100 Tiidas.
The Territory was a clear winner in the medium SUV class with a touch more than 2000 sales - about 1000 sales ahead of the Holden Captiva and 1600 up on the soon-to-be-replaced Kluger.
Toyota’s Prado recorded 1340 sales for June.
Nissan scored a rare victory in the large SUV segment, narrowly outselling the Toyota LandCruiser 100-Series with sales just above the 500 mark.
Commercial vehicle sales were strong in June as business fleets moved to buy up before the end of the financial year.
Toyota’s HiLux was a clear leader with around 4300 sales, while the Mitsubishi Triton put in a strong result to finish second with about 2400 sales.
Nissan’s Navara (left) also had a big month with close to 2100 sales, about 200 up on Holden’s struggling Rodeo, while the Ford Ranger could only manage around 1100.
Ford sold about 1200 Falcon utes in June, around 150 more than its Holden rival.
The light-car class also put in a strong showing in June.
The Toyota sat at the top of the tree with around 2900 sales, about 400 in front its nearest rival, the Hyundai Getz.
Honda’s Jazz was a distant third with around 1400 sales, about 400 in front of the Holden Barina.
The Camry was the clear champion in the mid-sized sedan segment, in front of Honda with about 1700 for its two Accord models and Mazda with around 1100 Mazda6s. Subaru sold more than 900 Liberties, while Holden’s Epica chipped in almost 450 sales.
The mid-sized SUV class also saw a Toyota on top, this time the RAV4 with around 1300 sales.
The Forester just outsold the Nissan X-Trail, with both selling around 1100 for the month.
The VFACTS figures released today will also confirm another convincing win by Toyota in the battle of the brands, the juggernaut notching up more than 24,000 sales to Holden’s tally of around 14,000.
Ford was third with a touch more than 10,000 sales for the month.
Suzuki was among a number of brands to record it best-ever month of sales in June, with a total of 2368 vehicles sold last month - a 53 per cent increase over its June 2006 figure.
The result sees Suzuki Australia more than 3200 sales or 43 per cent up on its January-June 2006 result, and keeps it on track to increase sales for the fifth consecutive year in 2007, when it expects to sell 20,000 vehicles.
