CHEVROLET'S Volt plug-in hybrid car received formal production approval from the GM board last week, which includes funding for production development and tooling.
According to GM, the ratification proves that the technology used on the Volt – including its lithium-ion batteries – will be ready for volume production late in 2010.
GM is close to announcing the all-important battery supplier for the Volt.
GM chairman and CEO Rick Wagoner vowed to show the production version of the vehicle “in the very near future” and reiterated GM’s intention to build the vehicle at its Detroit-Hamtramck assembly plant, subject to negotiations with government now taking place.
“We believe this is the biggest step yet in our industry’s move away from our historic, virtually complete reliance on petroleum to power vehicles,” he said.
