2010 BMW Z4 sDrive35is Car Review

Overview

IF YOU think the Z4 roadster is a bit soft, consider this: it can match an M3 sedan in a straight line. Well, it can if you select the range-topping $129,900 version that comes with the cumbersome name Z4 sDrive35is. Equipped with a sweet in-line six-cylinder engine assisted by two turbochargers, it generates enough mumbo to shoot from 0-100km/h in just 4.8 seconds. There is also the added bonus of being able to drop the roof for fun. The hot Z4 also comes with the super-fast seven-speed dual-clutch automatic transmission, which also has a launch control feature.

THE Z4 M is one of those models that bring out a smile when recalled by those who have driven it. In 2006, BMW crammed the awesome 3.2-litre naturally aspirated engine from the E46 M3 into the engine bay of the Z4. That engine had served in the M3 since 2001, but was still a cracking powerplant and generated a healthy 252kW of power when it revved all the way to 7900rpm. It was only available with the six-speed manual, as the SMG automated manual transmission could not be packaged to fit the vehicle.

The official 0-100km/h was an impressive five seconds. Unlike other Z4 models, the M version used a hydraulic steering assistance system (not electric) and regular tyres (not run flats).

The list price for the Z4 M was $129,500.
