Mazda / 323 / Protege 1.6 sedan
Overview
AFTER a burst of styling creativity with the last series of 323s, Mazda has
swung back to conservatism.
The latest 323s are more anonymous to look at, but
more practical cars that iron out the rough dynamic edges of their
predecessors.
Slightly shorter but roomier, they offer comfort where the
previous range concentrated on kerbside appeal.
Interior space, road
performance and quality are all of a high standard.
The 1.6-litre entry-level
version is slightly reluctant on-road; the 1.8-litre does a much better job.
Model release dates: September 1998 - June 2002
Previous model
Mazda's 323 has been a familiar face since the 1970s and the sleek BA series
was arguably the best looking ever. Available as a sedan or 5-door hatch and
offering 1.8-litre 4-cylinder or 2.0-litre V6 power, the front-drive 323
remains a solid used car proposition.
