Volkswagen / Golf / 77TDI 5-dr hatch
Overview
SOMETIMES things are not quite what they seem, and the same goes for the latest Golf diesel.
While the established 103TDI Comfortline ranks as one of the best small cars money can buy, the less expensive 77TDI diesel is something of a disappointment, not rising above the sum of its parts as the bigger engined model does.
This is not to say that we don’t like the 77TDI, but against the other Mk6 Golfs, it seems to be a bit of an underachiever.
Which is a pity really, because we love the idea of a reasonably priced small car with Toyota Prius-challenging economy and top-shelf dynamics.

Go to the Golf family tree
PERHAPS the most changed Golf ever, the Mk5 introduced a sophisticated multi-link rear suspension system to take the fight up to the leading Ford Focus, while maintaining brilliant levels of comfort and refinement. The 77kW/250Nm 1.9TDI turbo diesel is an old-school Pumpe Dusse item that provides plenty of low-down torque and impressive fuel economy, although some might say it is still quite noisy against the newer common rail units. Trendline equipment levels were good for the time but lacked stability control until the Edition model took over from early 2008.
