Toyota's first facelift of its 100-series saw the UZJ100R 170kW/410Nm 4.7 V8 replace the FZJ105R 4.5-litre six-cylinder engines across the range.

A five-speed auto usurped the four-speed units, the GXV-only independent front suspension and rack and pinion steering became standard across the range except on the Standard “van” six-seat wagon and GXL diesel, which retained the old live-axle and ball/nut tiller.

The RV and GXV vanished while the range-topping Sahara returned and included leather trim and satellite navigation, and the GXL gained standard ABS, air-conditioning and improved audio.

The range now included one workhorse Standard van with vertical rear “barn” doors, six seats and part-time 4WD, and GXL and Sahara seven and eight-seat wagons.

All models include dual airbags, front seatbelt pretensioners, engine immobiliser, tachometer, front and rear 120-watt accessory sockets, power steering, dual fuel tanks and a limited slip differential.

Limited editions included the GXL-based Kakadu from May ’04.

Toyota revised its 100 Series LandCruiser for the 2005 model year, with a slightly altered nose, revised tail-lights, increased features and improved air-conditioning.

The range now runs to seven models.
